About this deal

I’ve also got Coe’s book on deciphering the Mayan script, and I’m hoping that brings things to life a little more. Desk and exam copies of certain titles are available to lecturers who wish to consider books as course texts.

De Rosny initially gave it the name Codex Peresianus ("Codex Pérez") after its identifying wrapper, but in due course the codex would be more generally known as the Paris Codex. And through this incessant talk they create the key to their adaptive success: tradition, that is to say, the unquestioned lore of how things are done, the rules and regulations of how to live, routines about how to stay healthy, and, ultimately, how to survive. The Maya reveals how this ancient civilization – its buildings, ideas, objects and identities – has been perceived, portrayed and exploited over five hundred years in the Americas, Europe and beyond. There were many books in existence at the time of the Spanish conquest of Yucatán in the 16th century; most were destroyed by the Catholic priests.

I purchased this book in anticipation of a visit to various Mayan sites after I retire (which has not yet occurred). Find out about the incredible ancient civilizations of the Americas, right up until the Spanish conquest. A close analysis of glyphic elements suggests that a number of scribes were involved in its production, perhaps as many as eight or nine, who produced consecutive sections of the manuscript; the scribes were likely to have been members of the priesthood. You can use this fabulous resource to begin discussions on different points of the Maya's, and even get your children working in groups to find different bits of information they find interesting to read out!

It requires great patience over very long periods to produce sustainable improvements without introducing defects (like susceptibility to disease or pests). While it is true this can get a bit tedious, a great deal of what we know about the Maya comes from these very items--the Classic Maya put their glyphs everywhere, including on their pottery, murals, stelae (upright rectangular stones), and buildings. The latter has been compared in significance to the famed Classic-period murals at Bonampak; the Danta pyramid at El Mirador is the largest yet discovered at any Maya site, and is comparable in total volume to the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt.
