About this deal

And so, Galatea becomes a little jewel that centres the formerly nameless woman given life by a goddess, not only giving her voice, but a complexity and boldness – an agency – she was previously denied. Also echoing Circe, and showing one of Miller’s greatest skills, it’s a story that reimagines a classic myth and gives a new, powerful, and defiantly feminist voice to a previously misunderstood character. Galatea is a short story by Miller that dives into the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea from the perspective of Galatea, the former statue brought to life.

A small hardback edition featuring a new afterword by Madeline Miller**In Ancient Greece, a skilled marble sculptor has been blessed by a goddess who has given his masterpiece - the most beautiful woman the town has ever seen - the gift of life. Nor is Galatea’s fate the only enigmatic feature of the story, the telling of which raises all sorts of questions. So he sticks her in what is effectively an asylum - where she is drugged and kept by doctors and nurses. The Luther actor Ruth Wilson is the narrator, elevating Miller’s luminous prose and conveying Galatea’s disgust at her husband’s physical demands and her realisation that, to be free, she must draw on her own considerable strength. While Galatea sees these marks as a “sign” of their child, he sees them as a sign of her body’s imperfection. The title to be read and discussed is sign-posted and on sale for the whole of the previous month (with a discount for those who make it known they intend to come) and everybody is welcome, whether first-timer, part-timer or regular-timer.

Miller explores the original Pygmalion myth from the point of view of Galatea with a relatability that resonates throughout the ages. The power of her words to create a fully living woman was like the power of the sculptor to create the fully realized woman, Galatea.

I knew it was a short story so perhaps some nice illustrations so we feel we are getting more for our hard earned money.

In the original story, Pygmalion builds the most beautiful woman in the world out of ivory and makes her his wife after Venus turns her human. Galatea is this brave, beautiful, intelligent person, surviving Pygmalion's wrath and oppression for so long, and trying to shield her daughter from him. In the original story, Pygmalion makes his wife because he is disgusted by the promiscuity exhibited by the women of his time. Circe also won The Red Tentacle Award, an American Library Association Alex Award (adult books of special interest to teen readers), and the 2018 Elle Big Book Award. Madeline Miller has such a gift with words, with creating real characters you immediately care about and identify with. The moral of the tale, even if you think a woman has a heart of stone, don't assume this to be the case. Circe is a strange child - not powerful and terrible, like her father, nor gorgeous and mercenary like her mother. It’s a stunning piece of work that explores themes of fate and family, love and class, in lovely and propulsive prose that easily matches the mythic proportions of its source material.
